Windsurfing: Camber Sands - Little Maui Wind Direction: WSW Wind Stength: 70mph gusts reported by BBC Surf / Sea State: Mast high kack ya pants massiv Air Temperature: ok Sea Temperature: ok Weather: f o WINDY !! Max Speed: Distance Covered:
I dunno ... loads of work to do, re-scheduling stuff ... but still managed
to sort it and sneak off early and i convinced gutted to make the trip over
to camber, on the premise that if it was too nuclear we could alway try the
lake at rye so we at least got a sail (gutted had suggested a ressie
session at Bewl but i didn't fancy that, it tastes different )
We checked out Jurys as tide was starting to come up, got the windy's out
and it registered 'fu*k off windy' on the gutted windy meter ... the lake
was looking favourite. The sea was white water on the inside, but looked
better further out, as well as a touch windier. It seemed everyone was on
4.0m or smaller .... my smallest sail being 4.2m & gutted had a huge 4.5m
as his storm sail ...
Time for a trip up to the dunes to see if little maui was any more
sheltered and inviting ... recce with the windy meters, the 'gutted meter'
joined by the 'krafty windy' ... now both indicated 'fu*k off windy' ...
gusting 40 knots, steady (ish) 28-35 knots ....concensus was 3.7-4.2m so it
was a simple choice of rigging the smallest kit we had and developing the
biggest balls we could poste haste
gutted will recount his own session, but he had a good one judging by the
smiles (and from what i saw of him ) ... my session would always be an 'L'
plate session as I was using a sail i'd never rigged before and a board
that I've only stood on once before, in conditions that suggested I'd be
well advised to put another couple of quid in the RNLI pot .... cue the
hike over the dunes with my 4.2m Combat & Pocket Wave 78, the walk upwind
(do it early rather than when cream crackered) to launch, plus the rip is
less noticeable further upwind due to the river (local advice, cheers) ...
breather first ... then go ... and quick U turn to adjust set up, harnesss
lines too far forward, footstraps too big ... then go again
For some reason, I decided to head right out the back on one run, and as
much as everywhere is best based upon reputation etc etc, this was the
first time I'd ventured out the back of anywhere mast high (I was using a
370 mast mind ) ... obviously overcome by the occassion, dropped the gybe,
but the space between waves gave me much more time than i envisaged
preparing myself for a pounding ... sort rig, fly it, waterstart and sail
back in ... ride waves .. not on this run, i could see terra firma and I
required a foot plant and .. breathe .. and go again
I didn't do much of any note, other than sail in stuff beyond my limits and
return to base without any damage or incident .... got a couple of jumps
which seemed pretty high to me but refused to try anything as it was windy
up in the air, but after just the second go on my Pocket Wave 78 ever, I
think we might just become good mates, given the opportunities to develop
the relationship .
Loads of people there, and nice to see all the hardcore kiters were either
knitting or windsurfing ... Rich C took my set up out for a ride and seemed
to like it a little too much for my liking ... I sense an offer to p/x his
JP for my PW78 in the offing ... surely not
Good buch of people down at Camber and some very very good windsurfers
amongst them ... big back loops, massive forwards, very high table tops ...
and some daft sod trying to earn some stripes in conditions a little beyond
his ability ... errr ... that'll have been me then
Interesting range of boards ripping out there, best had to be the BiC
Techno 283 which was going really well ... but then on closer inspection it
was pretty obvious that this was Jamie Hawkins old Kbay custom sprayed up
for that famous 'techno' pic in the mags, pure class ...
Anyway, it was(nt) sunny, was(nt) windy, was(nt) fun and there is no point
in anyone considering swapping Shoreham etc for Camber, it just is(nt)
worth the trip, especially (not) as a decent south coast high tide nuking
wave sailing coastal venue
Happy days .. warmed up a treat for tomorrow now ... slightly nervous that
BBC gave 23mph for today and show 25mph for tomorrow ... that would
translate to 32-38 knots at the beach perhaps
edit ... the geriatric loopy fella was at it again , and is starting to go
for doubles now ... ... that'll put all us junior to Stu Ord-Hume to shame
.. so that'll be pretty much all of us, bar grumpf I guess
